On our northwoods honeymoon

Being late bloomers, or late boomers so to speak, we didn't marry until May of 1993. Looking to begin a new kind of life, and having the freedom of being self-employed and without children, we moved from the Twin Cities to northern Minnesota in September of 1994. Having spent many wonderful vacations on the Gunflint Trail and in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, we both knew and loved the lakes and forests of this natural paradise.

After much searching, planning and agonizing, we finally found and moved to our new home on beautiful Birch Lake. Leaving the big city behind and making a life for ourselves in this remote wilderness, while inconvenient at times, has brought us a sense of peace and happiness that transcends all previous experience.

O nature I do not aspire
To be the highest in thy quire,
To be a meteor in the sky
Or comet that may range on high,
Only a zephyr that may blow
Among the reeds by the river low.
Give me thy most privy place
Give me thy most airy race.
In some withdrawn unpublic mead
Let me sigh upon a reed,
Or in the woods with leafy din
Whisper the still evening in,
For I had rather be thy child
And pupil in the forest wild
Than be the king of men elsewhere
And most sovereign slave of care
To have one moment of thy dawn
Than share the city's year forlorn.
Some still work give me to do
Only be it near to you.
